In 1767, she failed at legislative council and then, groups with progressive characteristiscs appeared. They advocated ideology of French enlightenment and their books translated into Russian and spread into all regions in Russia. Catherine was one of the people who was interested in enlightenment therefore, she invited them to her palace and read their articles everyday. She tried new ideology enter into the Russian society as encouraging cultural, artistic and scientific studies to change Russia as a cultural society. As a result, she established hundreds of schools and supported the education demanding large amount of investment into this field. However, from the rebellion from Pugachev, she was shocked at people’s cruelty so that she opposed from the liberalism ideology. Also, she banned the liberialism and tried to revive monarchy along with France. On the other hand, in 1793, when Russian nobles heard that French emperor was killed, they all became nervous. Furthermore, Catherine the Great was too ill to continue the ruling and Russia cut off the relationship with France. In 1796, Catherine the great tried to marry her granddaughter Alexandra with king of Sweden however, he offered her granddaughter to convert her religion. Catherine the great couldn’t accept it. Therefore, in the exact engagement, the king of Sweden didn’t appear at the ceremony which gave numerous shock to Catherine the Great and led to her death after two month from the ceremony.
